Littlegill Holiday Home
Local Area
Littlegill sits in the small village of Roberton, with the Southern Uplands right on the doorstep and two of Scotland’s great cities within an hour. Whether you’re here to walk the hills, explore market towns, or simply slow down, there’s plenty within easy reach.
Tinto Hill
The best-loved walk in the area and only a 10 minute drive from the house, Tinto (711m) rises just up the road from the house. The main path starts from the Fallburn car park off the A73 and climbs past an Iron Age hillfort to one of the largest summit cairns in Scotland, with sweeping views across the Clyde valley — on a clear day you can see from the Lake District to the Highlands. Allow around three to four hours there and back, and pack a layer for a cold, breezy top whatever the season. The Tinto Hill Tearoom at the foot of the path makes for the perfect reward.
Biggar & Around
The friendly market town of Biggar is about fifteen minutes away, with a high street of genuinely independent shops — including an award-winning grocer, an ice-cream and chocolate shop, and a prize-winning chippy. It’s also home to a local museum, the only preserved Victorian gasworks in Scotland, and Scotland’s only permanent puppet theatre — a lovely rainy-day option with children.
New Lanark & The Falls Of Clyde
About half an hour away, New Lanark is a beautifully restored UNESCO World Heritage mill village beside the Falls of Clyde nature reserve — a memorable day out combining industrial history, riverside walks and wildlife-spotting, with the roar of the falls at the end of the woodland path.
Further Afield
For a bigger adventure, head to Wanlockhead and Leadhills — Scotland’s highest village, with a museum of lead mining and a narrow-gauge railway — around thirty minutes away. Glasgow and Edinburgh are both roughly an hour by car, so city days out are within grasp of your countryside retreat.
Getting Around
Abington (about ten minutes) has a filling station and shop at M74 Junction 13, while Lanark (around twenty-five minutes) has larger supermarkets and the nearest railway station, with regular trains to Glasgow. Drive times are approximate and can vary with the seasons.
